Five Tips to Get (and Keep!) Motivated

Motivation isn’t magic. There isn’t a “motivation pill” you can eat every morning that initiates your motivation. So what do you do when you’re feeling like you can’t reach your goals?

There are days when we experience barriers or holdups. Whether you’re having a bad day, feeling exhausted at work, or simply don’t know where to get going, it’s crucial to determine your “why.”

Your why is the objective behind what you’re going after. Fully identifying your why will help you remain motivated during those tough times and continue to move toward your personal goals.

Today, use some time to ponder your why–your focus–for why you’re accomplishing something.

Once you establish your why, write it down on a sticky note and keep it in an area you’ll see it daily, like your nightstand or bathroom mirror. When you’re feeling lost or unmotivated, remember your why and let that motivate you to continue reaching your goals.

What’s your goal? Lose weight? Add fitness? Revamp your eating habits?

How to Stay Motivated After Setting Goals

Now that you’ve established your why, here are some fantastic suggestions to help you stay energized to achieve your goals!

Make it Part of Your Routine

This seems uncomplicated, but establishing new practices can be challenging. It takes three weeks to develop a habit. No matter your goal, make time to chip away at it daily.

If you want to get your workout done when you wake up, put it on your calendar. If you want to plan your food every Sunday, pencil it in your datebook. With three weeks of sticking to it, it will become a component of your daily routine.

Keep it Easy

Portion your goals into smaller, more possible tasks. As an example, if you want to finish a marathon, you initiate training by running one mile a day–not 26!

Use this same method every time to establish a new goal. Break it down into smaller assignments that will lead you to the overall goal.

Make it Enjoyable

There’s no reason you can’t enjoy the process! Having a good time is not your opponent–in fact, it can be a great motivator. Take the time to be grateful for your work.

With all new obligations, you will learn and grow during the journey. And if your work is especially challenging, treat yourself once you’ve completed them!

Visualize the Finish Line

Make a mental photo of yourself accomplishing your goals: What does it look like? How do you feel in that moment?

Creating a mental picture is a powerful tool that can help keep you focused and motivated while working toward your objective. It’s an especially valuable technique when your work is challenging.

Stay Consistent

Take constant action every day–even if you don’t want to. Some days you may take massive action, while other days you might take less action. That’s OK! The key is to remain consistent.
